Last Saturday, we welcomed a new member of my family, a pet Chihuahua named Apple.
Hi! I'm Apple! |
Apple was an unexpected addition since mom mentioned time and time again that we won’t be getting another pet dog, that our current pet Chihuahua Gigi will be the last. So I was very surprised when mom said yes when my sister asked if mom was interested in a free dog from a breeder, from which sister's pet Chihuahua Pepper was bought from. I asked mom why. She said that since the dog is free, why not?
It was around 5pm. Sister and brother-in-law came to pick us up and head to the breeder’s home in Klang. Took us just less than an hour to reach there. The Chihuahua was already in a cage outside of the house when we reached there. To my surprise, the dog was very skittish and afraid of people; she would sit at the far end corner of the cage to avoid us. It was on our way home that I realized that the breeder has a number of pet Chihuahua with her and she purposely picked this particular one out and hid the rest, so that we won’t be able to choose.
Anyway, mom tried to comfort the dog and hold the dog into her arms. It took around 10-15 minutes (probably more) before the dog was finally calmed enough to stay still in mom’s arms. We said goodbye to the breeder and left for home. Throughout the journey, the dog stayed really still, sometimes lifted her head to look at the passing traffic.
Scared but curious |
Finally we reached home and placed her into the new cage that dad prepared earlier. She stayed quietly as we gave her some food and water. At the time, I was worried that the dog might be too shy to be sociable. We had our suspicion that the dog was shy at first and was ignored by the breeder for the active ones. We were still thinking of a name for the new pet. In the end, we settled for Apple because sister and brother-in-law mentioned quite a few times that the Chihuahua has a beautiful apple-shaped head.
Sleeping.... |
Fortunately, my worry of Apple’s skittishness was soon over. While she still refused to leave the cage and or be brought out by anyone, she shows her playfulness by chewing on newspapers. On Monday, mom and I bought some toys, a water bottle, a leash, dog snacks and a flea killer (We’ve been having some flea problems with Gigi. Damn stray cats!!). While we’re glad that Apple is happy and playful, we still need to “persuade” her to leave and cage and teach her not to chew the newspapers.
Welcome to the family, Apple!!
