I was visiting Amcorp Mall during the weekend after CNY. Heading towards my favourite bookstore, I noticed
Bookstreams, a used bookstore next to Kenny Rogers Roasters, was closed. The banner that used to hang outside the store was missing and renovations have already started. All the books were gone.
Can't say I was surprised by this, considering that there are four to five other book shops in this small shopping mall, as well as several book stalls in the flea market during the weekends. Competition was just too great for this old shop. While it might be able to compete with the Popular Bookstore downstairs some time ago, I think Bookxcess was the nail in the coffin with its newer books at lower prices that even gave Popular a run for its money.
I wonder what happened to all those books and magazines now that the shop was closed. Were they sold, donated or sent to recycling centers? I sure hoped it was the first two. As old and used as the books may be, they can still be enjoyed by those who haven't read them before.
