It's a bird! It's a plane!. It's...

The upcoming Superman movie, named "Man of Steel", will be released on 14 June 2013.

I've watched all of the Superman movies played by Christopher Reeve when I was a kid and loved them. The main title march and the song "Can You Read My Mind?" by Maureen McGovern still give me goosebumps. Even with the new movies and TV series came out, I still think that Christopher Reeve was the best actor to play the character.
When "Superman Returns" came out in 2006, I couldn't quite get used to the fact that it's not Christopher Reeve anymore.

The design of the costume stayed true to the original: The red-and-yellow S logo, the red cape, the blue skin-tight spandex and of course the infamous red shorts.

While it was acceptable in the 1980's and in comic books, I thought that they really should drop the red shorts in the movies. People have been making fun of the shorts as being an underwear from day one. Kal-El/Clark Kent was brought up and well-loved by the Kent family, well educated with several university degrees and well travelled. Understandably, he needed a costume for his Superman persona and to protect his identity as Clark Kent, using bright colours to convey trust among the public and fear among the wrongdoers, and the family crest to represent his family and the people of Krypton. But seriously, the red shorts? Surely Superman, even with the most basic of fashion sense, would realise the red shorts were just ridiculous? Can't he, or someone whom he can trust his secrets with, come up with a better design?

I had hoped that in the future Superman movies, someone will do something about the costume. My prayer was answered in "Man of Steel" as well as in the DC Comics' storyline reboot in 2011.

Many changes have been made to the costume but still very recognizable by everyone whose even vaguely familiar with the Superman character. The shorts were gone! It still has the family crest and the red cape in both designs. In the movie version, the colours were a lot darker with some addition designs and patterns at the wrist and waist areas. Only a gold-colour belt buckle was left with no belt. The comic book version still has the belt but was in red instead of the usual yellow. In the comic version, the costume was constructed using Kryptonian technology. While the details were not released, I'm guessing the movie version would be similar to that.

I like the new costume. More realistic and alien-like (Superman is an alien, after all). I'm interested in how this movie will turn out as it is a reboot of the original film series, and from the released trailers, a lot of focus was placed during the time before Kal-El became Superman.
