Ever wonder what's the big deal about reading books? Why would some people spend so much time in this "boring" activity? And why should we be doing the same thing too? Perhaps Read for Your Life can answer those questions for you.
Pat Williams, senior vice president of the NBA’s Orlando Magic and a former minor league baseball player, doesn't seem like the most convincing individual when it comes to reading. In fact, it was through reading that he became passionate about sports and is still a voracious reader from a younger age. Ask his wife Ruth and 19 children (14 adopted) and they'll tell you there wasn't a day when you find him without a book.
The books answers the 5W1H questions related to reading. It talks about the worrying state of America's reading habits and how they can improve and benefit from reading. It wasn't that people can't read, they just don't see books as sources of knowledge and inspiration. Most people just came up with excuses, perhaps the most used one was "too busy to read".
While the target audience of this book was Americans in general, most of the problems mentioned hold true for many Malaysians as well. Adults were "too busy" with work and the younger generation were "too busy" with Internet and games. The only printed material they're exposed to the most was probably the newspapers, and most likely the entertainment section.
So how do one develop an interest in reading? Some of the suggestions made by Williams included choosing books that you're interest or related to your profession and spend one hour of your day for reading. And it doesn't matter if you read for one straight hour or separate it into 12 five-minute periods or even 60 one-minute periods. If you can manage one hour each day, you could finish one book in a week. That's about 52 books in one year!! Quite an improvement from just two books a year!
I would recommend this book to casual readers out there. Perhaps it will help motivate them to read more books or help them encourage others in reading books.
