Remember your roots

This book tells a fictional story of the Lewis family since its African ancestors were brought to America as slaves up until the late 1970s. A story of one family's struggles to survive as slaves, to fight for their freedom during the Civil War, to strive against racial discrimination and oppression, all the while reminding themselves that they always have someone to lean on. That someone is family.

It's probably unfair to compare one book to another, but I have to say that The Glory Field didn't create a strong emotional impact as, say, The Kite Runner. Perhaps the pace was more mellow in comparison.

It does provide a more "personal" view on how a black person/family deals with being black in a white society. It's about survival, perseverance, pride, love, family. A three-star out of five.
